CHAPTER EIGHT

She drove home through the dark, and when she reached the edge of town and started heading north, she slowed to look out over the bay. It was a quiet night, and clear, and the moonlight reflected off of the gentle waves. It was a perfect moment, with her heart still full of happiness from the dinner, and the beauty of Lake Huron’s waters reaching out endlessly to her right She loved living in Crooked Bay. A part of her wished Jace and Layla were moving here instead of up north, but she couldn’t—and wouldn’t—begrudge them wanting to start their own life somewhere new to both of them.

Her apartment was only a short distance north of town, and as she turned into the parking lot, some of the peaceful, happy feeling faded. There was only a single, dingy orange light illuminating the lot, she could hear the sound of it buzzing as she stepped out of her vehicle. The sound was somehow more unsettling than pure silence would have been, and she rushed getting her purse and her phone out of the car. She ended up catching the strap of her purse around the steering wheel, and by the time she got it all untangled, her heart was pounding in her chest. She slammed the door, turned around, and almost screamed when she saw a man leaning against the wall beside the door to the apartment building.

It only took her a second to recognize Fred, but the recognition didn’t help settle the rapid pounding of her heart. This was the man the police had spoken to her about earlier today. This was the man who, if her guess was right, was the lead suspect in Hannah’s murder case.

She was sure her hands were shaking, but she forced a smile onto her face as she got her keys out and walked toward the door.

“Good evening,” she said, striving to keep her voice even and normal.

“Theresa, right?” Fred asked, his words short and gruff.

She nodded, already reaching for the doorknob. “Did you need something from me?”

“You haven’t been here long.” He pushed away from the wall. She pulled the door open and felt a rush of disappointment when he grabbed it, opening it the rest of the way, and stepped through after her. The hallway was more brightly lit than the parking lot, but the light wouldn’t do anything to save her if she needed help.

“Just a couple of months. I’m enjoying the place so far. The view is beautiful.”

“Some of the best views in town.” He glanced at her apartment door, frowning. “Think you’ll renew your lease next year?”

She had her keys in her hands but didn’t want to unlock her apartment door with him right there. The last thing she wanted was for him to follow her inside. “I’m not sure. I was hoping to buy a house next year, but it all just depends on how things go at work.”

He nodded, seeming to accept, or even approve of her answer.
